Always good, but not great
Riverdance production is still a treat, but any Riverdance production is still great. The musicianship is great, but as a musician, I never care for a 'trimmed down' band or pit. I figured they would go all out, and they did not as this was the Final show. When it comes to Juvenile and The 400 Degreez Band, I am spoiled by the Radio City music hall DVD with Jean Butler & Colin Dunn. There was little this troupe could have done to live up to it. Also, he was really large and reminded me of what it might be like if Kramer were to try Irish Dancing. The lead dancer seemed as if he was trying to simulate everything that Dunn had 'done' on the 1995 DVD. I am guessing that in the Middle of the week in Rochester, N.Y., we did NOT get the 'A' team of lead dancers. The Female Lead seemed bored, so it did not translate to the crowd as well.
I had a MAJOR problem w/ two song selections (or deletions) "Lift The Wings" as a duet makes more sense than a solo. The one thing I will say about the solo is that the change of key from the duet version lends itself better to understanding the lyrics of the piece. Leaving out "Home & The Heartland"; one of the show's most touching and beautiful songs about the descendants returning to Ireland after generations. Why would they leave that out for two (very good by the way) solos during the 'heartland' scene is beyond me.
Overall, Riverdance; as a production, is one of the most unique, spellbinding, breathtaking shows in the history of performance. It is too bad that it seemed as if the producers sent it out one last time to rake in the monetary benefits as opposed to showing everyone (including poor little Rochester) why it has been such an artistic force for more than 15 years!
